September 1986 - “Perhaps you have heard through friends or family that folks from Lincoln, Woodstock, and North Woodstock have joined together to form the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society. This all happened in response to a growing realization that the area is changing fast and that we are in danger of losing evidence of our past history.

Early last spring, the Society decided to find a building suitable for a museum... a place to meet, a place to receive, catalog and display memorabilia, and a place to learn about our history. The building which formerly housed the Union Church in Lincoln was for sale, and we felt that this building should be preserved for its own history as well as serve our needs. In June, we began a campaign to raise money for the purchase of the ‘little brown church.’

On September 4, we exchanged papers and paid $33,000 for the down payment on the little brown church. The money was raised through a canvas of the towns of Lincoln, Woodstock, and North Woodstock, through a random letter-writing campaign to former residents of these towns and from contributions from developers in the area. It should be mentioned that Loon Mountain Recreation Corporation has given a matching gift of $25,000 for contributions from their employees and/or residents of the three communities, half of which has already been realized.

We are very heartened by the generous contributions of the folks who live or have lived here and have memories of the area ‘as it was then.’ We are continuing to reach out to the community for support, particularly the business community whom we have not called on due to their busy summer season. And we are continuing to write to former residents who have, so far, responded enthusiastically to our appeal.

... We have a long way to go and are anxious to pay off our mortgages as soon as possible and get on with setting up our museum. Our application for tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code is pending. We are confident that it will soon be approved.”
